A Rest Remains — and a Word Sharper Than Any Sword

The Promise of Rest
4:1Therefore let us fear, lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any of you should seem to have fallen short.
4:2For we too have received good news just as they did, but the word they heard did not benefit them, because they had not been united by faith with those who heard.
4:3For we who believed enter rest, just as He has said, “As I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall certainly not enter My rest,’” although the works came into being from the foundation of the world.
4:4For He has said somewhere about the seventh day in this way, “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works.”
4:5And in this passage again, “They shall certainly not enter My rest.”
4:6Since, then, it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter because of disobedience,
4:7He again appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying in David after so long a time, just as has been said before, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
4:8For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken after these things about another day.
4:9So then, a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God.
4:10For the one who entered His rest also himself rested from his works, just as God did from His own.
The Living and Active Word
4:11Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one may fall in the same pattern of disobedience.
4:12For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrows, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
4:13And no created thing is hidden before Him, but all things are naked and laid open to His eyes, to whom we must give account.
A Great High Priest
4:14Therefore, having a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession.
4:15For we do not have a high priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One tested in all things according to our likeness, without sin.
4:16Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for timely help.
