He Learned Obedience from the Things He Suffered

The High Priest Appointed by God

5:1For every high priest taken from among human beings is appointed on behalf of human beings in matters concerning God, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

5:2He can deal gently with those who are ignorant and wandering, since he too is surrounded by weakness,

5:3and because of it he is obliged to offer for sins on his own behalf, just as on behalf of the people.

5:4And no one takes the honor for himself, but receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.

5:5So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become high priest, but the One who said to Him, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You,”

5:6as He also says in another place, “You are a priest for the age, according to the order of Melchizedek.”

5:7In the days of His flesh, He offered petitions and supplications, with loud crying and tears, to the One able to save Him out of death, and was heard because of His reverent fear.

5:8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered,

5:9and, having been perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him,

5:10having been designated by God high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Milk and Solid Food

5:11Concerning this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing.

5:12For although by this time you ought to be teachers, you again need someone to teach you the first elements of God’s oracles; you have come to need milk, not solid food.

5:13For everyone who partakes of milk is inexperienced in the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.

5:14But solid food belongs to the mature, whose faculties have been trained by practice to distinguish both good and evil.
