Appoint Elders in Every Town

Greeting

1:1Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God’s chosen ones and the knowledge of the truth that accords with godliness,

1:2in hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the ages,

1:3and in His own appointed times He revealed His word through proclamation, with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Savior,

1:4to Titus, a genuine child in a shared faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Elders Appointed in Crete

1:5For this reason I left you in Crete: that you might put in order what remained unfinished and appoint elders in each town, as I directed you—

1:6if anyone is beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, having faithful children who are not accused of reckless living or insubordinate.

1:7For the overseer must be beyond reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for shameful gain,

1:8but hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, just, devout, disciplined,

1:9holding firmly to the trustworthy word in accordance with the teaching, so that he may be able both to encourage through sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.

Rebuking the Insubordinate

1:10For there are also many insubordinate people, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,

1:11whose mouths must be stopped. They overturn whole households, teaching what they ought not to teach for the sake of shameful gain.

1:12One of their own, a prophet of theirs, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle bellies.”

1:13This testimony is true. For that reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith,

1:14not attending to Jewish myths and commands of people who turn away from the truth.

1:15To the pure, everything is pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure. Both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

1:16They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and unfit for every good work.
