Proclaim the Word

4:1I charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:

4:2proclaim the word; be ready in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all patience and teaching.

4:3For a time will come when they will not endure sound teaching, but according to their own desires they will heap up teachers for themselves, having their hearing tickled,

4:4and they will turn their hearing away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

4:5But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your service.

The Crown of Righteousness

4:6For I am already being poured out, and the time of my departure has arrived.

4:7I have struggled in the good struggle; I have finished the course; I have kept the faith.

4:8From now on the crown of righteousness is laid up for me, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give back to me on that day, and not to me alone but also to all who have loved His appearing.

Personal Instructions

4:9Be diligent to come to me soon,

4:10for Demas deserted me, having loved the present age, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia; Titus to Dalmatia.

4:11Luke alone is with me. Take Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service.

4:12But I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

4:13When you come, bring the cloak which I left in Troas with Carpus, and the books, especially the parchments.

4:14Alexander the coppersmith showed me many evils; the Lord will repay him according to his works.

4:15You too guard yourself against him, for he greatly opposed our words.

4:16At my first defense no one came to my side, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them.

4:17But the Lord stood beside me and empowered me, so that through me the proclamation might be fulfilled and all the nations might hear, and I was rescued from a lion’s mouth.

4:18The Lord will rescue me from every evil work and save me into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory for the ages of ages. Amen.

Final Greetings

4:19Greet Prisca and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus.

4:20Erastus remained in Corinth, but I left Trophimus sick in Miletus.

4:21Be diligent to come before winter. Eubulus greets you, and Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.

4:22The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you all.
