Three Broke Through the Camp to Fetch Him Water

David Anointed King over All Israel
11:1All Israel came to David at Hebron, saying, “Look, we are your bones and your flesh.
11:2Formerly, while Saul was king, you were the one leading Israel out and bringing them in. The Lord your God said to you, ‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be leader over Israel.’”
11:3All Israel’s elders came to the king in Hebron. King David established a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the Lord’s word through Samuel.
The Taking of Jebus
11:4The king and the men of Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; the Jebusites, inhabitants of the land, were there.
11:5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not enter here.” But he seized the fortified enclosure of Zion, which is the City of David.
11:6David said, “Whoever strikes a Jebusite first shall become a ruler and general.” Joab son of Sarouia went up against it first and became ruler.
11:7David settled in the fortified enclosure; therefore he called it the City of David.
11:8He built the city all around, and fought and took the city.
11:9David continued growing greater, and the Lord Almighty was with him.
The Rulers of David’s Mighty Men
11:10These were the rulers of David’s mighty men, who grew strong with him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, so that he might reign according to the Lord’s word concerning Israel.
11:11This was the number of David’s mighty men: Jesebaal son of Achamani, first of the thirty; he drew his sword once against three hundred wounded at one time.
11:12After him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Achochi; he was among the three mighty men.
11:13He was with David at Phasodomin, where the foreigners gathered for war. There was a portion of the field full of barley, and the people fled before the foreigners.
11:14He stood in the middle of the plot, saved it, and struck the foreigners; the Lord brought about a great deliverance.
The Water from the Well of Bethlehem
11:15Three of the thirty rulers went down to the rock, to David at the cave of Odollam, while the foreigners’ camp was encamped in the Valley of the Giants.
11:16David was then in the fortified enclosure, and the foreigners’ garrison was then in Bethlehem.
11:17David desired it and said, “Who will give me water to drink from Bethlehem’s cistern at the gate?”
11:18The three broke through the foreigners’ camp, drew water from the cistern in Bethlehem at the gate, took it, and came to David. David did not wish to drink it and poured it as a libation to the Lord.
11:19He said, “May God be gracious to me against doing this deed! Shall I drink these men’s blood at the cost of their lives? For they brought it at the cost of their lives.” He was unwilling to drink it. These things the three mighty men did.
Abessa and Banaias
11:20Abessa, Joab’s brother, was ruler of the three. He drew his sword against three hundred wounded at one time, and he was renowned among the three.
11:21Among the three he was honored above the two and became their ruler, but he did not attain to the three.
11:22Banaias son of Jodae, son of a mighty man—many were his deeds beyond Kabasael. He struck the two ariels of Moab; he also went down and struck the lion in the pit on a snowy day.
11:23He struck an Egyptian man, a conspicuous man five cubits tall. The Egyptian held a spear like a weavers’ beam. Banaias went down against him with a staff, took the spear from the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.
11:24These things Banaias son of Jodae did, and he had a name among the three mighty men.
11:25He was honored above the thirty, but did not attain to the three. David appointed him over his ancestral house.
The Mighty Men of the Forces
11:26The mighty men of the forces were Asael, Joab’s brother; Eleanan son of Dodo from Baithlaem;
11:27Sammoth the Adite; Chelles the Phelonite;
11:28Orai son of Ekkes the Thekoite; Abiezer the Anathothite;
11:29Sobochai the Asothite; Eli the Achoite;
11:30Moorai the Netophathite; Cholod son of Nooza the Netophathite;
11:31Aithi son of Ribai from Benjamin’s hill; Banaias the Pharathonite;
11:32Ouri from Nachaligaas; Abiel the Garabeththite;
11:33Azmoth the Beermite; Eliaba the Salabonite;
11:34Bennaias; Osom the Gennounite; Jonathan son of Sola the Ararite;
11:35Achim son of Sachar the Ararite; Elphal son of Our;
11:36Ophar the Mochorathite; Achia the Phelonite;
11:37Eserai the Charmalite; Naarai son of Azobai;
11:38Joel, Nathan’s brother; Mebaar son of Agari;
11:39Selek the Ammonite; Nachor the Berthite, carrying the equipment of Joab son of Sarouia;
11:40Ira the Jetherite; Gareb the Jetherite;
11:41Uriah the Chettite; Zabet son of Achlia;
11:42Adina son of Saiza of Reuben, a ruler, with thirty alongside him;
11:43Anan son of Moocha; Josaphat the Baithanite;
11:44Ozia the Astarothite; Samma and Jiiel, sons of Chothan the Ararite;
11:45Jediel son of Sameri; Joazae his brother, the Jeasite;
11:46Eliel the Miite; Jaribi and Josia his son; Elnaam; Jethema the Moabite;
11:47Aliel, Obed, and Jesiel the Misabite.
