The Death of Saul on Gelboue

10:1The foreigners fought against Israel. They fled before the foreigners and fell wounded on Mount Gelboue.

10:2The foreigners pursued Saul and his sons, and the foreigners struck Jonathan, Amminadab, and Melchisoue, Saul’s sons.

10:3The battle weighed heavily on Saul. The archers found him with bows and pains, and he suffered from the bows.

10:4Saul said to the man carrying his equipment, “Draw your sword and pierce me with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and mock me.” The man carrying his equipment was unwilling, for he was very afraid. Saul took the sword and fell on it.

10:5The man carrying his equipment saw that Saul was dead; he too fell on his sword and died.

10:6Saul and his three sons died on that day, and all his house died together.

10:7Every man of Israel in the valley saw that Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead. They abandoned their cities and fled; the foreigners came and dwelt in them.

The Foreigners Strip the Slain

10:8The next day the foreigners came to plunder the wounded and found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gelboue.

10:9They stripped him and took his head and his equipment, and sent throughout the foreigners’ land to announce good news to their idols and to the people.

10:10They placed his equipment in the house of their god, and placed his head in the house of Dagon.

The Men of Jabis Bury Saul

10:11All those dwelling in Galaad heard everything the foreigners had done to Saul and to Israel.

10:12Every mighty man arose from Galaad. They took Saul’s body and the body of his sons, brought them to Jabis, buried their bones beneath the oak in Jabis, and fasted seven days.

Why Saul Died

10:13Saul died in the lawless acts he committed against the Lord, according to the Lord’s word, because he did not keep it; because Saul inquired through the spirit medium to seek counsel, and Samuel the prophet answered him.

10:14He did not seek the Lord, and He killed him and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
