Chiram’s Messengers and David’s House

14:1Chiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, cedar wood, wall builders, and carpenters to build him a house.

14:2David knew that the Lord had established him over Israel, for his kingdom had increased on high for the sake of His people Israel.

David’s Sons Born in Jerusalem

14:3David took more wives in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to David.

14:4These were the names of those born to him in Jerusalem: Samaa, Isobaam, Nathan, Solomon,

14:5Ibaar, Elisae, and Eliphalet,

14:6Nage, Naphag, and Janouou,

14:7Elisamae, Balegdae, and Eliphalet.

The First Victory in the Valley of the Giants

14:8The foreigners heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, and all the foreigners went up to seek David. David heard and went out to meet them.

14:9The foreigners came and fell upon the Valley of the Giants.

14:10David inquired through God, saying, “Shall I go up against the foreigners, and will You give them into my hands?” The Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hands.”

14:11He went up to Baalpharasin, and David struck them there. David said, “God has cut through my enemies by my hand like a cutting of water.” Therefore he called that place the Cutting of Pharasin.

14:12They abandoned their gods there, and David ordered that they be burned with fire.

The Sound in the Tops of the Trees

14:13The foreigners came again and again fell upon the Valley of the Giants.

14:14David again inquired of God, and God said to him, “Do not go behind them. Turn away from them and approach them near the pear trees.

14:15When you hear the sound of shaking in the tops of the pear trees, then go out to war, for God has gone out before you to strike the foreigners’ camp.”

14:16He did as God commanded him, and he struck the foreigners’ camp from Gabaon to Gazara.

14:17David had a name throughout all the land, and the Lord placed the fear of him upon all the nations.
