David’s charge to Israel and Solomon (28:1–10)

Verse 28:1 Divergent

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:1] David assembled in Jerusalem all Israel's officials: the tribal officials, the officials of the divisions serving the king, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the officials over all the property and livestock of the king and his sons, with the court officers, the mighty men, and every man of valor.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:1] David assembled in Jerusalem all Israel's rulers: the rulers of the judges, the rulers of the service courses attending the king's person, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, the treasury keepers, those over his possessions, the powerful men, and the army's warriors.

Classification & Notes

Divergent. Text: Hebrew tribal officials become Greek rulers of judges. Greek expressly names treasury keepers and omits the livestock, the king's sons, and the separate court-officer group. Hebrew sarisim may denote eunuchs or court officers; the broader office term is used without assuming bodily status.

Verse 28:2 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:2] King David stood upon his feet and said, “Hear me, my brothers and my people. I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of YHWH's covenant and for the footstool of our God, and I prepared to build.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:2] David stood in the midst of the assembly and said, “Hear me, brothers and my people. It came upon my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the Lord's covenant and a standing place for our Lord's feet, and I prepared the things suitable for the dwelling.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew describes standing on his feet and calls the ark-related place God's footstool; Greek locates David in the assembly and says a standing place for our Lord's feet. Greek explicitly refers to prepared materials rather than simply preparing to build.

Verse 28:3 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:3] But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for My name, because you are a man of wars and have shed blood.’

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:3] But God said, ‘You shall not build Me a house to have My name called upon it, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: The prohibition and reason agree. Greek expands the name expression as having the name called upon the house and leaves to me unexpressed in the introduction.

Verse 28:4 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:4] YHWH, the God of Israel, chose me from all my father's house to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and in Judah's house my father's house, and among my father's sons He was pleased with me to make me king over all Israel.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:4] The Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from all my father's house to be king over Israel forever. He chose the royal power in Judah, and from Judah's house my father's house, and among my father's sons He was willing that I become king over all Israel.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew calls Judah leader; Greek locates the royal power in Judah. Both preserve the narrowing sequence of election to David.

Verse 28:5 Same

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:5] From all my sons—for YHWH has given me many sons—He chose Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of YHWH's kingdom over Israel.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:5] From all my sons—for the Lord gave me many sons—He chose Solomon my son to seat him upon the throne of the Lord's kingdom over Israel.

Classification & Notes

Same. Text: Both explicitly call the kingdom the Lord's and identify Solomon as the chosen son.

Verse 28:6 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:6] He said to me, ‘Solomon your son will build My house and My courts, for I have chosen him as a son to Me, and I will be a Father to him.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:6] God said to me, ‘Solomon your son will build My house and My court, for I have chosen him to be My son, and I will be a Father to him,

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek explicitly names God as speaker and has singular court; Hebrew has plural courts. The son-and-Father relationship agrees.

Verse 28:7 Same

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:7] I will establish his kingdom forever, if he remains strong to do My commandments and My judgments, as on this day.’

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:7] and I will set his kingdom upright forever, if he remains strong to observe My commandments and My judgments, as on this day.’

Classification & Notes

Same. Text: Both attach an obedience condition to the enduring kingdom promise.

Verse 28:8 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:8] Now, before the eyes of all Israel, YHWH's assembly, and in the hearing of our God, keep and seek all the commandments of YHWH your God, so that you may possess this good land and leave it as an inheritance to your sons after you forever.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:8] Now, before the whole assembly of the Lord and in the ears of our God, observe and seek all the commandments of the Lord our God, so that you may inherit the good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your sons after you forever.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek omits the separate all Israel expression and says our God where Hebrew has your God in the commandment clause. The intergenerational inheritance purpose agrees.

Verse 28:9 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:9] You, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing soul, for YHWH searches every heart and understands every formation of thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:9] Now, Solomon my son, know the God of your fathers and serve Him with a complete heart and a willing soul, for the Lord examines every heart and knows every thought. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you abandon Him, He will abandon you utterly.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew singular father becomes Greek plural fathers. Hebrew rejection forever corresponds to Greek abandonment to the end, rendered utterly; both retain the conditional warning and God's knowledge of inward thought.

Verse 28:10 Same

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:10] See now that YHWH has chosen you to build a house as a sanctuary. Be strong and act.”

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:10] See, therefore, that the Lord has chosen you to build Him a house as a sanctuary. Be strong and act.”

Classification & Notes

Same. Text: Greek explicitly says for Him; both give the same choice and command.

The temple pattern and the call to courage (28:11–21)

Verse 28:11 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:11] David gave Solomon his son the plan of the vestibule, its houses, its treasuries, its upper rooms, its inner chambers, and the room of the atonement cover;

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:11] David gave Solomon his son the pattern of the temple, its houses, its zakcho, its upper rooms, its inner storerooms, and the house of propitiation;

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew vestibule becomes Greek temple. Greek retains zakcho where Hebrew has treasuries and calls the inner chambers storerooms. Hebrew specifies the atonement cover, while Greek names propitiation more generally.

Verse 28:12 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:12] and the plan of all that was with him in spirit: the courts of YHWH's house, all the surrounding chambers, the treasuries of God's house, and the treasuries of the consecrated things;

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:12] and the pattern he had in his spirit: the courts of the Lord's house, all the surrounding chambers for the storerooms of the Lord's house, and the storerooms of the holy things;

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek explicitly says his spirit; Hebrew has in spirit with him. Neither column inserts Holy Spirit as an explicit title. Hebrew God's house corresponds to Greek Lord's house, and Greek attaches the surrounding chambers to the storerooms.

Verse 28:13 Divergent

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:13] and for the divisions of the priests and Levites, for all the work of the service of YHWH's house, and for all the vessels of the service of YHWH's house;

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:13] and the lodgings of the priests' and Levites' service courses for all the work of ministry in the Lord's house, and the storerooms of the service vessels for worship in the Lord's house.

Classification & Notes

Divergent. Text: Greek explicitly adds lodgings and storerooms to the organization of the courses and equipment. Hebrew refers directly to the divisions and vessels.

Verse 28:14 Divergent

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:14] for the gold by weight, gold for all the vessels of each kind of service, and for all the silver vessels by weight, for all the vessels of each kind of service;

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:14] He gave the measure of their weight, both the gold and the silver ones;

Classification & Notes

Divergent. Text: Greek is substantially shorter, omitting the repeated every-kind-of-service descriptions and attaching the gold and silver weight statement to the preceding equipment.

Verse 28:15 Divergent

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:15] and the weight for the golden lampstands and their golden lamps, by the weight of each lampstand and its lamps; and for the silver lampstands, by weight for each lampstand and its lamps, according to the service of each lampstand;

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:15] he gave him the weight of the lampstands and of the lamps.

Classification & Notes

Divergent. Text: Greek omits the separate gold and silver specifications and the repeated each-lampstand and service clauses. The preceding Greek unit has already mentioned gold and silver generally.

Verse 28:16 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:16] and the gold by weight for the tables of arrangement, for each table, and silver for the silver tables;

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:16] Likewise he gave him the weight of the tables of presentation, each golden table, and likewise of the silver ones;

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Both distinguish the golden presentation tables and silver tables. Greek explicitly repeats the act of giving him their weight.

Verse 28:17 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:17] and the forks, sprinkling basins, and pitchers of pure gold; and for the golden bowls, the weight of each bowl, and for the silver bowls, the weight of each bowl;

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:17] and of the meat hooks, libation vessels, and golden bowls, and the weight of the gold and silver ones, kephphoure of each weight.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: The vessel terms do not correspond exactly. Greek omits pure and retains kephphoure as an opaque borrowed form where Hebrew has bowl terminology; its final compressed construction is not expanded into the Hebrew repeated clauses.

Verse 28:18 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:18] and for the incense altar, refined gold by weight, and gold for the pattern of the chariot, the cherubim spreading out and covering the ark of YHWH's covenant.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:18] He showed him the weight of the incense altar of tested gold, and the pattern of the chariot of the cherubim with outspread wings, overshadowing the ark of the Lord's covenant.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek explicitly names wings and the act of showing him, but has no separate gold specification for the cherubim. Both retain the chariot image and the ark-covering posture.

Verse 28:19 Divergent

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:19] “All this, in writing from YHWH's hand upon me, He made me understand—all the works of the plan.”

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:19] David gave Solomon everything in writing from the Lord's hand, according to the understanding that had come to him about carrying out the pattern.

Classification & Notes

Divergent. Text: Hebrew has an abrupt first-person declaration about received understanding; Greek explicitly narrates David giving Solomon the written material and elaborates the understanding clause. Both retain the Lord's hand as the writing's source.

Verse 28:20 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:20] David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and act. Do not fear or be dismayed, for YHWH God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work of the service of YHWH's house is finished.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:20] David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong, act courageously, and act. Do not fear or be terrified, for the Lord my God is with you. He will not let you go or abandon you until you finish all the work of ministry in the Lord's house.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Hebrew repeats God as God, my God; Greek has my God once and explicitly makes Solomon the subject of finishing. The assurance of divine accompaniment agrees.

Verse 28:21 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

[28:21] Look, the divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the service of God's house. With you in every kind of work is every willing person skilled in every service, and the officials and all the people are ready for all your words.”

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

[28:21] Look, the service courses of the priests and Levites are ready for all ministry in God's house, and are with you in every undertaking, together with everyone eager and wise in every craft. The rulers and all the people are ready for all your words.”

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Both promise personnel and skilled willing assistance. Greek connects with you more directly to the service courses before adding the craftspeople.
