Asa Hires the Son of Ader
16:1In the thirty-eighth year of Asa’s reign, Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah and fortified Rama, to allow no exit or entrance for Asa king of Judah.
16:2Asa took gold and silver from the treasuries of the Lord’s house and the king’s house and sent it to the son of Ader, Syria’s king, who lived in Damascus, saying,
16:3“Make a covenant between me and you, and between my father and your father. Look, I have sent you gold and silver. Come, drive Baasha king of Israel away from me, and let him depart from me.”
16:4The son of Ader listened to King Asa and sent his army commanders against Israel’s cities. He struck Ion, Dan, Abelmain, and all Naphtali’s surrounding districts.
16:5When Baasha heard, he gave up building Rama any further and stopped his work.
16:6King Asa took all Judah and took Rama’s stones and timber with which Baasha had built. With them he built Gabae and Maspha.
Anani the Prophet Rebukes Asa
16:7At that time Anani the prophet came to Asa king of Judah and said, “Because you trusted in Syria’s king and did not trust in the Lord your God, Syria’s force has been saved from your hand.
16:8Were not the Ethiopians and Libyans a great force, with confidence and exceedingly many horsemen? Yet because you trusted in the Lord, He handed them into your hands.
16:9For the Lord’s eyes look throughout all the earth, to show strength in every heart that is whole toward Him. You have acted ignorantly in this; from now on there will be war with you.”
16:10Asa became enraged with the prophet and put him in prison, because he was angry over this. Asa also maltreated the people at that time.
The Illness and Death of Asa
16:11Look, Asa’s deeds, first and last, are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
16:12In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became ill in his feet, until he was very ill. In his illness he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians.
16:13Asa fell asleep with his fathers and died in the thirty-ninth year of his reign,
16:14and they buried him in the tomb he had dug for himself in David’s city. They laid him on the bed and filled it with spices and kinds of perfumers’ ointments, and made an exceedingly great funeral procession for him.
