Jehoshaphat King of Judah
17:1Jehoshaphat his son became king in his place, and Jehoshaphat grew strong against Israel.
17:2He stationed a force in all Judah’s fortified cities and appointed leaders in all Judah’s cities and in Ephraim’s cities that Asa his father had seized.
17:3The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in his father’s earlier ways and did not seek the idols,
17:4but sought the Lord, his father’s God, and walked in his father’s commandments, unlike Israel’s works.
17:5The Lord established the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat. He had abundant wealth and glory.
17:6His heart was lifted up in the Lord’s way, and he further removed the high places and sacred groves from Judah’s land.
Teachers Sent Through Judah
17:7In the third year of his reign he sent his leaders and the sons of the mighty men—Abdia, Zacharia, Nathanael, and Michaia—to teach in Judah’s cities,
17:8and with them the Levites Samouia, Nathania, Zabdia, Asiel, Semiramoth, Jonathan, Adonia, and Tobia, the Levites; and with them Elisama and Joram, the priests.
17:9They taught in Judah, having with them a book of the Lord’s law. They went through Judah’s cities and taught the people.
The Terror of the Lord upon the Kingdoms
17:10Terror from the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the earth around Judah, and they did not fight Jehoshaphat.
17:11Some of the foreigners brought Jehoshaphat gifts, silver, and offerings. The Arabs brought him seven thousand and seven hundred rams of the flock.
17:12Jehoshaphat continued becoming greater, rising to a height. He built dwellings in Judea and fortified cities.
17:13He had many works in Judea, and powerful, mighty warriors in Jerusalem.
The Muster of Judah and Benjamin
17:14This was their number by ancestral houses. For Judah, commanders of thousands: Ednas the ruler, with three hundred thousand mighty sons of strength;
17:15after him, Joanan the leader, with two hundred and eighty thousand;
17:16after him, Amasia, Zachri’s son, who was eager for the Lord, with two hundred thousand mighty men of strength.
17:17From Benjamin, Eliada, a mighty man of strength, with two hundred thousand archers and light-shield bearers;
17:18after him, Jozabad, with a hundred and eighty thousand mighty in war.
17:19These ministered to the king, apart from those the king had stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judea.
