The Second Speech of Bildad
18:1Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
18:2“How long will you not stop?
Hold back, so that we ourselves may speak.
18:3Why have we been silent before you like four-footed animals?
18:4Wrath has dealt with you.
What then? If you die, will the world beneath heaven be uninhabited,
or will mountains be overturned from their foundations?
18:5The light of the ungodly will be extinguished,
and their flame will not come forth.
18:6His light is darkness in his dwelling,
and the lamp above him will be extinguished.
18:7May the least people hunt down his belongings,
and may his counsel stumble.
18:8His foot has been thrown into a trap;
may he be entangled in a net.
18:9May traps come upon him;
the thirsty will be made strong against him.
18:10His cord is hidden in the earth,
and his capture upon the paths.
18:11May pains destroy him all around,
and may many come about his feet in severe famine.
18:12An extraordinary fall has been prepared for him.
18:13May the branches of his feet be devoured;
death will devour his beautiful things.
18:14May healing burst away from his dwelling,
and may distress hold him on a royal charge.
18:15It will lodge in his tent during his night;
his splendid things will be strewn with sulfur.
18:16Below, his roots will dry up;
above, his harvest will fall.
18:17May his memorial perish from the earth,
yet he has a name on the outer face of the land.
18:18May he thrust him from light into darkness.
18:19He will not be recognized among his people,
nor will his house be preserved beneath heaven,
but others will live in what was his.
18:20Those who came last groaned over him,
and astonishment seized those who came first.
18:21These are the houses of the unjust,
and this is the place of those who do not know the Lord.”
