Elihu: What Does Your Righteousness Give to Him?

The Third Speech of Elihu

35:1Then Elihu replied:

35:2“Why have you reckoned this as judgment?
Who are you to say, ‘I am righteous before the Lord’?

35:3Or will you say, ‘What will I do if I sin?’

35:4I will give you an answer,
and your three friends.

35:5Look up into heaven and see;
observe the clouds, how high they are above you.

35:6If you sinned, what will you accomplish?
If you also acted lawlessly many times, what can you do?

35:7Since, then, you are righteous, what will you give Him,
or what will He receive from your hand?

35:8Your ungodliness is for a man like you,
and your righteousness for a son of humanity.

35:9Those oppressed by a multitude will cry out;
they will shout because of the arm of many.

35:10Yet he did not say, ‘Where is God who made me,
who appoints watches of the night,

35:11who distinguishes me from the four-footed beasts of earth
and from the birds of heaven?’

35:12There they will cry out, and He will certainly not hear,
also because of the insolence of evil people.

35:13For the Lord does not wish to see improper things;
for the Almighty Himself observes

35:14those who carry through lawless things, and He will save me.
Enter into judgment before Him,
if you can praise Him as He is.

35:15And now, because He is not examining His anger
and has not taken much notice of a transgression,

35:16Job vainly opens his mouth
and weighs down words in ignorance.”
