One in Ten Chosen to Live in the City

Lots Cast to Dwell in Jerusalem

11:1The rulers of the people lived in Jerusalem. The remainder of the people cast lots to bring one in ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, and nine portions in the towns.

11:2The people blessed all the men who willingly offered to live in Jerusalem.

11:3These are the rulers of the country who lived in Jerusalem. In the towns of Jouda, each lived on his possession in their towns: Israel, the priests, Levites, Nathinaioi and the sons of Salomon’s slaves.

The Sons of Jouda and of Beniamin

11:4Some of the sons of Jouda and of the sons of Beniamin lived in Jerusalem. From the sons of Jouda: Athaia son of Azaia, son of Zacharia, son of Amaria, son of Saphatia, son of Malelel, and from the sons of Phares;

11:5and Maasia son of Barouch, son of Chalaza, son of Ozia, son of Adaia, son of Jorib, son of Thezia, son of the Seloni.

11:6All the sons of Phares who lived in Jerusalem were four hundred sixty-eight men of ability.

11:7These are the sons of Beniamin: Selo son of Mesoulam, son of Joad, son of Phadaia, son of Kolia, son of Masaia, son of Aithiel, son of Jesia;

11:8and after him Gebi and Seli: nine hundred twenty-eight.

11:9Joel son of Zechri was overseer over them, and Joudas son of Asana was second over the city.

The Priests

11:10From the priests: Jadia son of Jorib, Jachin,

11:11Saraia son of Elkia, son of Mesoulam, son of Saddouk, son of Marioth, son of Aitob, opposite the house of God;

11:12and their brothers doing the work of the house: Amasi son of Zacharia, son of Phassour, son of Melchia,

11:13heads of families: two hundred forty-two; and Amessai son of Esdriel,

11:14and his brothers, men strong for battle: one hundred twenty-eight. Their overseer was Badiel.

The Levites

11:15From the Levites: Samaia son of Asoub, son of Ezri,

11:17and Mathania son of Micha, and Obed son of Samoui,

11:18Two hundred eighty-four.

11:19The gatekeepers: Akoub, Telamin and their brothers: one hundred seventy-two.

11:22The overseer of the Levites was a son of Bani: Ozi son of Asabia, son of Micha, from the sons of Asaph, the singers, opposite the work of the house of God.

11:23For the king’s command was upon them.

11:24Pathaia son of Baseza was at the king’s hand in every matter for the people.

The Farmsteads of Jouda

11:25As for the farmsteads in their field, some of the sons of Jouda lived in Kariatharbok,

11:26and in Jesou,

11:27and in Beersabee,

11:30and their farmsteads, Lachis and its fields. They encamped in Beersabee.

The Settlements of Beniamin

11:31The sons of Beniamin were from Gaba: Machamas.

11:36From the Levites, portions of Jouda were for Beniamin.
