The Lion Has Roared; Who Will Not Fear?

You Alone Have I Known

3:1Hear this word that the Lord spoke against you, house of Israel, and against every tribe I brought up from Egypt’s land, saying:

3:2“You alone have I known among all the earth’s tribes; therefore I will exact judgment upon you for all your sins.”

Will Two Go Together?

3:3Will two go together at all unless they make themselves known to one another?

3:4Will a lion roar from its thicket without prey? Will a young lion give its voice from its enclosure at all unless it has seized something?

3:5Will a bird fall upon the ground without a fowler? Will a trap be sprung upon the ground without catching something?

3:6Will a trumpet sound in a city and the people not be alarmed? Will there be calamity in a city that the Lord has not done?

3:7For the Lord God will certainly do no deed unless He reveals His discipline to His servants the prophets.

3:8A lion will roar—and who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken—and who will not prophesy?

Witnesses Summoned Against Samaria

3:9Announce to the regions among the Assyrians and to Egypt’s regions: “Gather upon Samaria’s mountain and see the many astonishing things in her midst and the oppression within her!”

3:10“She did not know what would be against her,” says the Lord—those storing injustice and suffering in their regions.

3:11Therefore thus says the Lord God: “Tyre, your land will be desolated all around; he will bring down your strength from you, and your regions will be plundered.”

3:12Thus says the Lord: “As when a shepherd snatches two legs or an earlobe from a lion’s mouth, so the sons of Israel who dwell in Samaria will be snatched out, opposite a tribe, and priests in Damascus.”

Against the Altars of Bethel

3:13“Hear and bear witness to Jacob’s house,” says the Lord God Almighty,

3:14“because on the day I exact judgment upon Israel for its impieties, I will also exact judgment upon Bethel’s altars. The altar’s horns will be demolished and fall upon the ground,

3:15and I will confound and strike the colonnaded house along with the summer house. Ivory houses will perish, and many other houses will be added,” says the Lord.
