The First Vision: The Brood of Locusts

7:1The Lord showed me this: Look, a brood of locusts was coming at dawn, and look, one bruchus locust, Gog the king.

7:2When it finishes devouring the land’s grass, I said, “Lord, Lord, be merciful! Who will raise Jacob? He is so few!

7:3Relent, Lord, concerning this.” “This will not happen,” says the Lord.

The Second Vision: Judgment by Fire

7:4The Lord showed me this: Look, the Lord called for judgment by fire; it devoured the great abyss and devoured the portion.

7:5I said, “Lord, Lord, cease, please! Who will raise Jacob? He is so few!

7:6Relent, Lord, concerning this.” “This certainly will not happen,” says the Lord.

The Third Vision: The Adamant Wall

7:7The Lord showed me this: Look, a man was standing upon an adamant wall, with adamant in his hand.

7:8The Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” I said, “Adamant.” The Lord said to me, “Look, I am setting adamant in the midst of My people Israel. I will certainly no longer pass them by,

7:9and the altars of laughter will disappear, and Israel’s rites will be desolated. I will rise against Jeroboam’s house with a sword.”

Amaziah Sends to Jeroboam

7:10Amaziah, priest of Bethel, sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos is forming conspiracies against you in the midst of Israel’s house. The land certainly cannot endure all his words,

7:11because Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by a sword, and Israel will be led captive away from its land.’”

7:12Amaziah said to Amos, “Seer, go! Withdraw to Judah’s land; make your living there, and there you will prophesy.

7:13But you must never again prophesy at Bethel, because it is a king’s sanctuary and a house of kingship.”

I Was No Prophet, but a Goatherd

7:14Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet or prophet’s son, but a goat herder and a scratcher of sycamore figs,

7:15and the Lord took me from the sheep, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’

7:16Now hear the Lord’s word: You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and you must not stir up a crowd against Jacob’s house.’

7:17Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Your wife will practice prostitution in the city, your sons and daughters fall by a sword, and your land be measured out with a cord. You will die in an unclean land, and Israel will be led captive away from its land.’”
