A Man with a Measuring Reed at the Gate

The Vision of the City on the Mountain

40:1In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, in the first month, on the tenth of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was captured, on that day the Lord’s hand came upon me, and He led me

40:2in a vision of God into Israel’s land and set me upon a very high mountain. Upon it, opposite, was something like a city’s structure.

40:3He brought me in there, and behold, a man whose appearance was like gleaming copper. In his hand were a builders’ cord and a measuring reed, and he stood at the gate.

40:4The man said to me, ‘Have you seen, son of man? See with your eyes, hear with your ears and set in your heart everything I show you, for you have entered here so that it might be shown to you. Show Israel’s house everything you see.’

40:5Behold, an enclosure surrounded the house outside. In the man’s hand was a reed measuring six cubits by the cubit and handbreadth. He measured the outer wall: its width equaled the reed, and its height equaled the reed.

40:6He entered the gate facing east by seven steps and measured the gate’s porch, equal to the reed,

40:7and the chamber, one reed long and one reed wide; the porch between the chambers was six cubits. The second chamber was one reed wide and one reed long, and the porch five cubits,

40:8and the third chamber was one reed wide and one reed long,

40:9and the gateway’s porch beside the gate’s porch was eight cubits, the jambs two cubits, and the gate’s porch on the inside.

40:10The gate’s chambers were chambers opposite one another, three on this side and three on that side, one measurement for all three and one measurement for the porches on this side and that side.

40:11He measured the gateway door’s width, ten cubits, and the gateway’s breadth, thirteen cubits,

40:12with one additional cubit before the chambers on each side, and the chamber six cubits on this side and six cubits on that side.

40:13He measured the gate from a chamber’s wall to a chamber’s wall, twenty-five cubits wide, gate opposite gate.

40:14The open court of the gate’s porch was sixty cubits, with twenty chambers around the gate.

40:15From the gate’s outer open court to the inner open court of the gate’s porch was fifty cubits.

40:16There were concealed windows upon the chambers and porches inside the courtyard gate all around, and likewise windows around the porches inward, and palm trees upon the porch on both sides.

40:17He brought me into the inner courtyard. Behold, there were chambers and colonnades around the courtyard, thirty chambers in the colonnades,

40:18and porticoes behind the gates, corresponding to the gates’ length—the lower colonnade.

The Outer Courtyard and Its Gates

40:19He measured the courtyard’s width from the outer gate’s open court inward to the open court of the gate facing outward, one hundred cubits, at the east-facing gate. He brought me north,

40:20and behold, a gate faced north in the outer courtyard. He measured its length and width.

40:21Its chambers, three on this side and three on that side, its jambs, porches and palm trees matched the east-facing gate’s measurements: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits broad.

40:22Its windows, porches and palm trees were like the east-facing gate. They went up it by seven steps, and its porches were on the inside.

40:23A gate in the inner courtyard faced the north gate, as with the east-facing gate. He measured the courtyard from gate to gate, one hundred cubits.

40:24He led me south, and behold, a gate faced south. He measured it, its chambers, jambs and porches according to these measurements.

40:25Its windows and porches all around were like the porch’s windows: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits broad.

40:26It had seven steps, with porches on the inside and palm trees upon its jambs, one on this side and one on that side.

40:27A gate stood opposite the gate of the inner courtyard toward the south. He measured the courtyard from gate to gate, a breadth of one hundred cubits toward the south.

The Inner Courtyard

40:28He brought me into the inner courtyard by the south-facing gate and measured the gate according to these measurements,

40:29with its chambers, jambs and porches according to these measurements. It and its porches had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits broad.

40:31The porches faced the outer courtyard, with palm trees upon the jambs and eight steps.

40:32He brought me into the east-facing gate and measured it according to these measurements,

40:33with its chambers, jambs and porches according to these measurements. It and its porches had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits broad.

40:34The porches faced the inner courtyard, with palm trees upon the jambs on this side and that side, and it had eight steps.

40:35He brought me into the north-facing gate and measured according to these measurements,

40:36with its chambers, jambs and porches. It and its porch had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits broad.

40:37Its porches faced the outer courtyard, with palm trees upon the jambs on this side and that side, and it had eight steps.

The Chambers for the Offerings

40:38Its chambers, doorframes and porches were at the gate—

40:39the second—with a drain, so that they may slaughter there the offerings for sin and for ignorance.

40:40Behind the burnt offerings’ channel at the north-facing gate were two tables toward the east; behind the second and the gate’s porch were two tables toward the east,

40:41four on this side and four on that side behind the gate. Upon them they will slaughter the victims, opposite the eight tables for victims.

40:42There were four hewn-stone tables for the burnt offerings, one and a half cubits wide, two and a half cubits long and one cubit high. Upon them they will place the implements with which they slaughter the burnt offerings and victims there.

40:43They will have a hewn ledge of one handbreadth inside all around, and coverings above the tables to shelter them from rain and dry heat.

The Chambers of the Priests

40:44He brought me into the inner courtyard, and behold, two recessed chambers were in the inner courtyard: one behind the north-facing gate faced south, and one behind the south gate faced north.

40:45He said to me, ‘This recessed chamber facing south is for the priests who keep the house’s charge,

40:46and the recessed chamber facing north is for the priests who keep the altar’s charge. They are Zadok’s sons, who draw near to the Lord from Levi to minister to Him.’

40:47He measured the courtyard, one hundred cubits long and one hundred cubits broad on its four sides, and the altar before the house.

40:48He brought me into the house’s porch. He measured the porch’s jamb, five cubits broad on this side and five on that side; the doorway’s breadth was fourteen cubits, and the porch door’s side pieces three cubits on this side and three on that side.

The Porch of the Temple

40:49The porch was twenty cubits long and twelve cubits broad. They went up to it by ten steps, and there were pillars at the porch, one on this side and one on that side.
