A Hole in the Wall, and What Was Done Inside

Carried to Jerusalem in Visions
8:1In the sixth year, in the fifth month, on the fifth of the month, I was sitting in the house, and Judah’s elders were sitting before me. The Lord’s hand came upon me,
8:2and I saw, and behold, the likeness of a man: from His waist downward, fire, and from His waist upward, like the appearance of electrum.
8:3He stretched out the likeness of a hand and lifted me by the crown of my head. A spirit lifted me between earth and heaven and brought me to Jerusalem in a vision of God, to the entrance of the inner gate facing north, where the pillar of the one acquiring stood.
8:4And behold, the glory of the Lord God of Israel was there, in accordance with the vision I had seen in the plain.
The Image at the North Gate
8:5He said to me, “Son of man, look up with your eyes toward the north.” I looked up with my eyes toward the north, and behold, from the north to the gate toward the east.
8:6He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what these people do? They commit great lawlessness here, to keep away from My holy places. You will yet see greater lawlessness.”
The Seventy Elders in the Dark
8:7He brought me to the courtyard entrance
8:8and said to me, “Son of man, dig.” I dug, and behold, there was a door.
8:9He said to me, “Go in and see the lawlessness these people are committing here.”
8:10I went in and saw, and behold, vain abominations and all the idols of the house of Israel were drawn upon it all around,
8:11and there were seventy men from the elders of the house of Israel. Jaazaniah son of Shaphan stood among them before their faces; each had his censer in his hand, and the vapor of incense rose.
8:12He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do, each in their hidden bedchamber? For they said, ‘The Lord does not see; the Lord has abandoned the land.’”
8:13He said to me, “You will yet see greater lawlessness that these people are committing.”
Greater Lawlessness at the Gate
8:14He brought me to the entrance of the gate of the Lord’s house facing north, and behold, women were sitting there lamenting Tammuz,
8:15and He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen? You will yet see practices greater than these.”
Those Worshiping Toward the East
8:16He brought me into the inner court of the Lord’s house, and behold, at the entrance of the Lord’s temple, between the porches and the altar, were about twenty men, their backs toward the Lord’s temple and their faces opposite. These were bowing to the sun.
8:17He said to me, “Have you seen, son of man? Is it a small thing for the house of Judah to commit the lawlessness they have committed here? For they have filled the land with lawlessness, and behold, they are as though sneering.
8:18I too will act toward them in wrath. My eye will not spare, nor will I have mercy.”
