Hosea 3 — Hebrew and Greek compared
Disparate in this chapter: 3:1, 3:2
Each card keeps the independently rendered source readings above their shared comparison and reception notes. The badge records the source’s governing classification; disparate readings are marked in red. Each reading retains its original reference.
Chapter 3
Love, waiting and the search for David
Verse 3:1 Disparate
Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)
3:1 YHWH said to me again, “Go, love a woman loved by a companion and committing adultery, as YHWH loves Israel's sons, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.”
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
3:1 The Lord said to me, “Go again and love a woman who loves evil things and is an adulteress, just as God loves Israel's sons, though they look toward foreign gods and love cakes with raisins.”
Classification & Notes
Disparate. Text: Hebrew a woman loved by a companion becomes Greek a woman loving evil things, changing who loves and what is loved. Greek names God where Hebrew repeats YHWH. The raisin food and divine love amid Israel's unfaithfulness remain; neither source here names the woman Gomer.
Verse 3:2 Disparate
Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)
3:2 I acquired her for myself for fifteen pieces of silver, a homer of barley and a lethech of barley.
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
3:2 I hired her for myself for fifteen pieces of silver, a gomor of barley and a nebel of wine.
Classification & Notes
Disparate. Text: Hebrew acquisition and two quantities of barley become Greek hiring, barley and a wine container. The silver amount agrees, while no shekel unit is inserted into either unstated silver measure. Ancient container names are retained rather than assigned unsupported modern capacities.
Verse 3:3 Similar
Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)
3:3 I said to her, “You will remain for me many days; you must not prostitute yourself or belong to a man, and I likewise toward you.”
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
3:3 I said to her, “You will remain with me many days; you must certainly not prostitute yourself or belong to another man, and I toward you.”
Classification & Notes
Similar. Text: Both give a period of waiting, two prohibitions and an elliptical reciprocal commitment. Greek explicitly says another man; Hebrew does not. The final unexpressed action is left open rather than made an explicit sexual promise or abstinence clause.
Verse 3:4 Different
Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)
3:4 For Israel's sons will remain many days without king or official, without sacrifice or standing stone, without ephod or teraphim.
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
3:4 For Israel's sons will remain many days without king or ruler, without sacrifice or altar, without priesthood or manifestations.
Classification & Notes
Different. Text: Hebrew standing stone, ephod and teraphim becomes Greek altar, priesthood and manifestations. The last Greek term dēla concerns disclosed signs in this religious list but does not identify a specific object. All six absences are retained.
Verse 3:5 Similar
Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)
3:5 Afterward Israel's sons will return and seek YHWH their God and David their king; they will come trembling to YHWH and His goodness in the latter days.
Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)
3:5 After these things Israel's sons will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king; they will be astonished at the Lord and His good things in the last days.
Classification & Notes
Similar. Text: Seeking God and David agrees. Hebrew trembling toward divine goodness becomes Greek astonishment at divine good things. David remains the explicit name; a messianic identification belongs in reception notes. Saints: Augustine explicitly identifies David here with Christ and reads Israel’s later seeking in that Christian frame. His identification is reception, not a replacement for the name David [AUG-HOS].
