Chapter 5

Judgment upon priests, rulers and the people

Verse 5:1 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:1 Hear this, priests; pay attention, house of Israel; listen, house of the king, for the judgment concerns you. You became a trap at Mizpah and a net spread over Tabor.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:1 Hear these things, priests; pay attention, house of Israel; listen, house of the king, for the judgment is against you. You became a trap at the lookout and like a net stretched over Itabyrion,

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek renders Mizpah as lookout and gives Tabor as Itabyrion. The accusation concerns the same three groups; the Greek net continues into the following verse.

Verse 5:2 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:2 The deviators have gone deep into slaughter, but I am discipline for them all.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:2 which those hunting game fixed in place. But I am your instructor.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew's difficult slaughter/deviators/deepening sequence becomes hunters fixing the preceding net in Greek. Hebrew discipline for all becomes your instructor. The Hebrew wording is provisional; no reconstructed alternative text is substituted.

Verse 5:3 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me. For now you have prostituted yourself, Ephraim; Israel is defiled.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not away from Me; for now Ephraim has prostituted himself and Israel is defiled.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Greek not away from Me replaces Hebrew not hidden from Me and changes direct address to third person. Divine knowledge and defilement agree.

Verse 5:4 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:4 Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God, for a spirit of prostitution is within them, and they do not know YHWH.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:4 They did not direct their schemes toward returning to their God, for a spirit of prostitution is within them, and they did not recognize the Lord.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew deeds prevent return; Greek people fail to direct their deliberations toward return. The internal spirit and failure to know God agree.

Verse 5:5 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:5 Israel's pride testifies against him. Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their guilt; Judah too has stumbled with them.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:5 Israel's arrogance will be humbled before his face. Israel and Ephraim will weaken in their injustices, and Judah too will weaken with them.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew pride bears witness; Greek arrogance is humbled. The shared collapse includes Judah, whose Hebrew completed action becomes Greek future weakness.

Verse 5:6 Same

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:6 With their flocks and herds they will go to seek YHWH, but they will not find Him; He has withdrawn from them.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:6 With sheep and calves they will go to seek the Lord, but they will certainly not find Him, because He turned away from them,

Classification & Notes

Same. Text: The livestock accompanying the futile search and God's withdrawal correspond; Greek continues its reasons into the next verse.

Verse 5:7 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:7 They dealt treacherously with YHWH, for they fathered foreign sons. Now a new moon will devour them with their portions.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:7 because they abandoned the Lord, because foreign children were born to them. Now blight will devour them and their allotments.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew new moon or month becomes Greek blight. Hebrew active begetting becomes children born to them. Both predict consumption of the people and their portions.

Verse 5:8 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:8 Blow a horn in Gibeah, a trumpet in Ramah! Sound the alarm at Beth-aven! Behind you, Benjamin!

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:8 Blow a trumpet on the hills; sound out on the heights; proclaim in the house of On! Benjamin was beside himself;

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek renders Gibeah and Ramah as hills and heights, and replaces the Hebrew directional cry Behind you with Benjamin's dismay. Beth-aven and house of On remain distinct forms.

Verse 5:9 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:9 Ephraim will become a desolation on the day of correction. Among Israel's tribes I have made known what is certain.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:9 Ephraim was brought to ruin in days of rebuke. Among Israel's tribes I revealed trustworthy things.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Both announce Ephraim's ruin and the certainty of the disclosure. Greek uses completed ruin and plural days where Hebrew has a future and singular day.

Verse 5:10 Same

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:10 Judah's officials have become like people moving a boundary; upon them I will pour My fury like water.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:10 Judah's rulers became like people moving boundaries; upon them I will pour My onrush like water.

Classification & Notes

Same. Text: Both condemn boundary movement and promise an outpouring of divine anger, expressed in Greek as an impetuous assault.

Verse 5:11 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he willingly followed a command.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:11 Ephraim oppressed his adversary and trampled judgment, because he began to follow worthless things.

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew Ephraim suffers oppression and judicial crushing; Greek Ephraim oppresses another and crushes justice. Hebrew ṣaw, command, becomes worthless things. The reversal of responsibility is retained.

Verse 5:12 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:12 I am like a moth to Ephraim and like rot to Judah's house.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:12 I am like turmoil to Ephraim and like a goad to Judah's house.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Both depict divine affliction, but moth and decay become disturbance and a sharp goad; the images are not assimilated.

Verse 5:13 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:13 Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound; Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to King Jareb. But he cannot heal you or remove the wound from you.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:13 Ephraim saw his illness and Judah his pain; Ephraim went to the Assyrians and sent ambassadors to King Jarim. But he could not heal you, and pain will certainly not cease among you.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek expressly supplies ambassadors and makes the concluding pain the subject of non-cessation. Hebrew Jareb may function as a hostile or contentious royal title; Greek Jarim is preserved without identifying an otherwise unnamed Assyrian king.

Verse 5:14 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:14 For I am like a lion to Ephraim and like a young lion to Judah's house. I, I will tear and go away; I will carry off, and no one rescues.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:14 For I am like a panther to Ephraim and like a lion to Judah's house. I seize and will go away and take, and there will be no one to rescue.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Greek panther and lion replace Hebrew lion and young lion. The divine attack, departure and absence of rescue agree.

Verse 5:15 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

5:15 I will go, return to My place, until they acknowledge guilt and seek My face. In their distress they will earnestly seek Me.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

5:15 I will go and return to My place until they disappear; they will seek My face, and in their affliction they will rise early toward Me, saying,

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew becoming guilty or acknowledging guilt becomes Greek disappearing. Greek expressly introduces the following chapter's words with saying; Hebrew does not. Rising early conveys earnest seeking without removing the Greek time image.
