Jacob Pitied and Given Rest
14:1The Lord will pity Jacob and again choose Israel; they will rest upon their land, and the resident foreigner will be added to them and added to Jacob’s house,
14:2and nations will take them and bring them into their place; they will inherit and multiply upon God’s land as male and female slaves. Those who took them captive will be captives, and those who ruled them will be ruled.
14:3On that day God will give you rest from pain, your wrath and the harsh slavery in which you served them,
14:4and you will take up this lament against Babylon’s king and say on that day, “How the exactor has rested, and the taskmaster rested!
God Shattered the Rulers’ Yoke
14:5God shattered the sinners’ yoke, the rulers’ yoke;
14:6having struck a nation in wrath with an incurable blow, striking a nation with a blow of anger that did not spare,
14:7he rested confidently. The whole earth cries out with gladness,
14:8and Lebanon’s trees rejoiced over you, and Lebanon’s cedar: ‘Since you fell asleep, the one cutting us has not come up.’
14:9Hades below grew bitter on meeting you. All the giants who ruled the earth rose together for you, those who raised all the nations’ kings from their thrones.
14:10They will all answer and say to you, ‘You too were captured as we were, and were numbered among us.’
14:11Your glory went down to Hades, your abundant gladness. They will spread decay beneath you, and your covering is a worm.
14:12How the dawn-bearer who rises in the morning fell from heaven! The one dispatching to all the nations was shattered to earth.
I Will Ascend to Heaven
14:13You said in your mind, ‘I will ascend to heaven, set my throne above heaven’s stars, and sit on a high mountain, upon the high mountains toward the north.
14:14I will ascend above the clouds; I will be like the Most High.’
14:15But now you will descend to Hades and to the earth’s foundations.
14:16Those who see you will marvel at you and say, ‘Is this the person who provoked the earth, shook kings,
14:17who made the whole inhabited world deserted and pulled down the cities, who did not release those in captivity?’
14:18All the nations’ kings fell asleep in honor, each in his own house;
14:19but you will be thrown into the mountains like an abhorred dead man, with many dead pierced by swords, descending to Hades. As a garment stained with blood will not be clean,
14:20so neither will you be clean, because you destroyed My land and killed My people. You will certainly not endure for everlasting time, evil offspring.
14:21Prepare your children to be slaughtered because of your father’s sins, so that they do not rise, inherit the earth and fill the earth with cities.”
14:22“I will rise against them,” says the Lord Sabaoth, “and destroy their name, remnant and offspring”—thus says the Lord—
14:23“and make Babylonia deserted, so that hedgehogs dwell there; she will become nothing. I will make her a muddy abyss for destruction.”
As I Said, So It Will Be
14:24Thus says the Lord Sabaoth: “As I said, so it will be, and as I counseled, so it will endure,
14:25to destroy the Assyrians from My land and from My mountains. They will become a trampling place; their yoke will be removed from them, and their glory removed from the shoulders.”
14:26This is the counsel the Lord has counseled concerning the whole inhabited world, and this the high hand over all the world’s nations.
14:27For what the holy God has counseled, who will scatter? And who will turn back the high hand?
14:28In the year King Achaz died, this utterance came:
Do Not Rejoice, All You Foreigners
14:29“Do not rejoice, all you foreigners, because the yoke of the one striking you was shattered; for from snakes’ seed asp offspring will come, and their offspring will emerge as flying snakes.
14:30The poor will be fed through him, and poor men will rest in peace; but he will destroy your seed with famine and destroy your remnant.
14:31Wail, gates of cities! Let troubled cities cry out, all the foreigners, because smoke comes from the north, and there is no surviving.
14:32What will the nations’ kings answer? That the Lord founded Zion, and through Him the people’s humble will be saved.”
