Isaiah Goes Naked as a Sign Against Egypt

20:1In the year Tanathan entered Azotus, when he was sent by Arna king of the Assyrians and fought Azotus and seized it,

20:2then the Lord spoke to Isaiah, saying, “Go, remove the sackcloth from your waist and undo your sandals from your feet.” He did so, going naked and without sandals.

20:3The Lord said, “As Isaiah My servant has gone naked and without sandals for three years, there will be signs and wonders for the Egyptians and Ethiopians;

20:4for thus the king of the Assyrians will lead Egypt’s and the Ethiopians’ captivity, young men and elders, naked and without sandals, exposed as Egypt’s shame.

The Shame of Those Who Trusted in Egypt

20:5The Egyptians will be ashamed in defeat because of the Ethiopians, in whom the Egyptians had trusted, for they were their glory.

20:6Those dwelling on this island will say, ‘Look, we had trusted that we could flee to them for help, but they could not be saved from the king of the Assyrians. How, then, shall we be saved?’”
