The Vision of Tyre
23:1The vision of Tyre. Wail, ships of Carthage, because she has perished, and they no longer come from the Kitians’ land; she has been led captive.
23:2Whom have the island-dwelling traders of Phoenicia become like, crossing the sea
23:3upon much water, seed of traders? Like a harvest being brought in are the nations’ traders.
23:4“Be ashamed, Sidon,” said the sea; and the sea’s strength said, “I did not labor or give birth or rear young men or raise maidens.”
23:5When it becomes known to Egypt, pain will seize them concerning Tyre.
23:6Go away to Carthage! Wail, residents of this island!
23:7Was this not your insolence from the beginning, before she was handed over?
23:8Who planned these things against Tyre? Is she weaker, or has she no strength? Her merchants are glorious, rulers of the earth.
The Lord’s Counsel Against the Insolence of Tyre
23:9The Lord Sabaoth planned it, to dissolve all the insolence of the glorious and dishonor everything glorious upon the earth.
23:10Work your land, for ships no longer come from Carthage.
23:11Your hand no longer has strength at sea, the hand that provoked kings. The Lord Sabaoth commanded concerning Canaan, to destroy her strength.
23:12They will say, “You shall no longer continue in insolence and in wronging Sidon’s daughter.” Even if you go to the Kitians, there too you will have no rest,
23:13and into the Chaldeans’ land: this too has been devastated by the Assyrians. There too you will have no rest, because her wall has fallen.
23:14Wail, ships of Carthage, because your fortress has perished!
Tyre Left for Seventy Years
23:15On that day Tyre will be left for seventy years, like a king’s time, like a person’s time. After seventy years, Tyre will be like a prostitute’s song:
23:16“Take a lyre, wander through cities, forgotten prostitute! Play the lyre well, sing much, so that you may be remembered.”
23:17After seventy years God will make a visitation of Tyre, and she will again be restored to her former state and become a trading center for all the inhabited world’s kingdoms.
23:18Her trade and her wage will be holy to the Lord. It will not be collected for them; instead, all her trade will be for those dwelling before the Lord, to eat and drink and be filled, as a contribution, a memorial before the Lord.
