People Walking in Darkness See a Great Light
9:1People walking in darkness, see a great light! Those dwelling in a country and a shadow of death, light will shine upon you.
9:2The greater part of the people, whom You brought down in Your joy—they will also rejoice before You like those rejoicing at harvest and like those dividing spoils.
9:3For the yoke lying upon them and the rod upon their neck have been removed; for the Lord scattered the rod of the exactors, as on the day against Midian.
9:4For they will repay every robe gathered by deceit and a garment with compensation; and they will wish that they had been burned by fire.
A Child Born to Us
9:5For a child was born to us, a son was also given to us, whose rule came to rest on his shoulder; his name is called Messenger of Great Counsel. For I will bring peace upon the rulers, peace and soundness to him.
9:6Great is his rule, and his peace has no boundary, upon David’s throne and his kingdom, to set it right and support it with righteousness and judgment, from now and for everlasting time. The zeal of the Lord Sabaoth will do these things.
Judgment on the Pride of Ephraim and Samaria
9:7The Lord sent death against Jacob, and it came upon Israel,
9:8and all Ephraim’s people and those settled in Samaria will know, saying in insolence and a lofty heart,
9:9“Bricks have fallen, but come, let us hew stones, cut down sycamores and cedars, and build ourselves a tower.”
9:10God will dash those rising against Mount Zion upon them, and He will scatter their enemies,
9:11Syria from the sun’s rising and the Greeks from the sun’s setting, who devour Israel with their whole mouth. For all these things the anger did not turn away, but the hand is still high.
9:12The people did not turn back until they were struck, and they did not seek the Lord.
The Lord Removed Head and Tail
9:13The Lord removed from Israel head and tail, great and small, in one day,
9:14the elder and those who show favoritism—this is the leadership—and the prophet teaching lawless things—this is the tail.
9:15Those blessing this people will be misleaders, and they lead astray in order to swallow them up.
9:16Therefore God will not rejoice over their young men, and He will not pity their orphans or widows, because all are lawless and evil, and every mouth speaks unjust things. For all these things the anger did not turn away, but the hand is still high.
The Fire of Lawlessness and Civil Strife
9:17Lawlessness will burn like fire and be consumed by fire like dry grass; it will burn in the forest’s thickets and consume together everything around the hills.
9:18Through the fury of the Lord’s anger the whole earth has been burned, and the people will be as though burned by fire. A person will not pity his brother,
9:19but will turn to the right because he will hunger, and eat from the left; a person eating the flesh of his own arm will certainly not be filled.
9:20For Manasseh will eat from Ephraim, and Ephraim from Manasseh, because together they will besiege Judah. For all these things the anger did not turn away, but the hand is still high.
