He Broke the Wooden Yoke, and an Iron One Came

Hananiah Breaks the Yoke

35:1And in the fourth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month, Hananiah son of Azzur, the false prophet from Gibeon, said to me in the Lord’s house before the priests and all the people:

35:2Thus said the Lord: I smashed Babylon’s king’s yoke.

35:3In two full years I will return to this place the vessels of the Lord’s house,

35:4and Jeconiah and Judah’s deportees, because I will smash Babylon’s king’s yoke.

Jeremiah Answers Hananiah

35:5And Jeremiah said to Hananiah before all the people and before the priests standing in the Lord’s house,

35:6and Jeremiah said: Truly! May the Lord do so. May He establish your word that you prophesy, returning the vessels of the Lord’s house and all the deportees from Babylon to this place.

35:7Nevertheless, hear the Lord’s word that I speak in your ears and in all the people’s ears:

35:8The prophets who were before me and before you from of old prophesied over much land and against great kingdoms concerning war.

35:9The prophet who prophesied peace—when the word comes, they will know the prophet whom the Lord sent to them in faithfulness.

35:10And Hananiah took the collars from Jeremiah’s neck before all the people and smashed them.

35:11And Hananiah said before all the people: Thus said the Lord: This is how I will smash Babylon’s king’s yoke from all the nations’ necks. And Jeremiah went his way.

35:12And the Lord’s word came to Jeremiah after Hananiah smashed the collars from his neck, saying:

The Iron Yoke and the Death of Hananiah

35:13Go and tell Hananiah: Thus said the Lord: You smashed wooden collars, and I will make iron collars in their place.

35:14Because thus said the Lord: I placed an iron yoke upon all the nations’ necks to work for Babylon’s king.

35:15And Jeremiah said to Hananiah: The Lord has not sent you, and you made this people trust in injustice.

35:16Therefore thus said the Lord: Look, I am sending you away from the earth’s face. This year you will die.

35:17And he died in the seventh month.
