Chapter 43
The flight into Egypt and the hidden stones
Hebrew source: BHS43 • chapter 43
Greek source: LXX50 • chapter 50
Verse 43:1 Divergent
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:1] When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all the words of YHWH their God, with which YHWH their God had sent him to them—all these words—
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:1] When Jeremiah stopped speaking to the people all the Lord's words, with which the Lord had sent him to them—all these words—
Classification & Notes
Divergent. Text: Greek lacks all before people and both occurrences of their-God. Both preserve the emphatic repeated all-these-words.
Verse 43:2 Different
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:2] Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, You are speaking falsely! YHWH our God did not send you to say, Do not enter Egypt to reside there.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:2] Azariah son of Maaseiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the men who spoke said to Jeremiah, You are lying! The Lord did not send you to us to say, Do not enter Egypt to live there.
Classification & Notes
Different. Text: Greek Maaseiah differs from Hoshaiah and lacks the Hebrew description arrogant and our-God; it adds to-us. The repeated Greek speech construction is smoothed without adding the missing moral designation.
Verse 43:3 Similar
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:3] Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us, to hand us over to the Chaldeans, to kill us and deport us to Babylon.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:3] Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is setting you against us, so that you will hand us over to the Chaldeans, to put us to death and have us deported to Babylon.
Classification & Notes
Similar. Text: Greek explicitly makes Jeremiah the handing-over subject with you; Hebrew has an infinitive. Both report the speakers' accusation, not an endorsed account of Baruch's conduct.
Verse 43:4 Divergent
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:4] Johanan son of Kareah, all the army commanders, and all the people did not obey YHWH's voice by remaining in Judah's land.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:4] Johanan, all the commanders of the force, and all the people did not obey the Lord's voice by remaining in Judah's land.
Classification & Notes
Divergent. Text: Greek lacks Johanan's patronymic; the stated disobedience corresponds.
Verse 43:5 Divergent
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:5] Johanan son of Kareah and all the army commanders took all Judah's remnant who had returned from all the nations where they had been scattered to reside in Judah's land:
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:5] Johanan and all the commanders of the force took all Judah's survivors who had returned to live in the land:
Classification & Notes
Divergent. Text: Greek lacks Johanan's patronymic, the return-from-all-scattered-nations clause, and Judah in the final land designation.
Verse 43:6 Different
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:6] the men, women, children, the king's daughters, and every person Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:6] the mighty men, the women, the little children, the king's daughters, the people Nebuzaradan had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, and Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.
Classification & Notes
Different. Text: Greek calls the men mighty, lacks every, the guard title, and son-of-Shaphan. Souls is rendered people in this population list.
Verse 43:7 Similar
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:7] They entered Egypt's land, for they had not obeyed YHWH's voice. They came as far as Tahpanhes.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:7] They entered Egypt, for they had not obeyed the Lord's voice. They entered Taphnas.
Classification & Notes
Similar. Text: The recognizable place has distinct customary Hebrew/Greek forms; the Greek repeats entered rather than came-as-far-as.
Verse 43:8 Same
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:8] YHWH's word came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes:
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:8] The Lord's word came to Jeremiah at Taphnas:
Classification & Notes
Same. Text: Both introduce the sign act at the Egyptian destination.
Verse 43:9 Different
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:9] Take large stones in your hand and hide them in mortar in the brickwork at the entrance of Pharaoh's house at Tahpanhes, before the eyes of Judean men.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:9] Take large stones for yourself and hide them in the forecourt at the gate of Pharaoh's house at Taphnas, before the eyes of Judah's men.
Classification & Notes
Different. Text: Greek forecourt/gate differs from Hebrew mortar/brickwork/entrance. Brickwork is provisional for malben, which can denote a brick-making installation; no archaeological identification is claimed.
Verse 43:10 Disparate
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:10] Tell them, Thus says YHWH of hosts, Israel's God: I am sending for and bringing Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, My servant. I will place his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his canopy over them.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:10] Say, Thus said the Lord: I am sending and will bring Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He will place his throne above these stones that you hid and raise his weapons over them.
Classification & Notes
Disparate. Text: Greek he-will-place and you-hid differ from Hebrew I-will-place and I-hid; Greek weapons differs from the rare Hebrew canopy term. Greek lacks to-them, of-hosts, Israel's-God, and My-servant. No Babylonian weapon terminology is inserted into Hebrew.
Verse 43:11 Similar
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:11] He will come and strike Egypt's land: those destined for death, to death; those for captivity, to captivity; and those for the sword, to the sword.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:11] He will enter and strike Egypt's land: those for death, to death; those for deportation, to deportation; and those for the sword, to the sword.
Classification & Notes
Similar. Text: The threefold fate formula corresponds; Greek specifies deportation where Hebrew has captivity. Destined is supplied to express the Hebrew verbless construction, not a separate predestination claim.
Verse 43:12 Disparate
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:12] I will kindle fire in the houses of Egypt's gods. He will burn them and take them captive. He will wrap himself in Egypt's land as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will leave there in peace.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:12] He will kindle fire in the houses of their gods, burn the houses, and deport the gods. He will delouse Egypt's land as a shepherd delouses his garment, and he will go out in peace.
Classification & Notes
Disparate. Text: Greek consistently has he against Hebrew initial I; its delouse differs sharply from Hebrew wrap. Greek feminine them refers to houses and masculine them to gods; the English makes this distinction explicit. Hebrew's repeated masculine them is less formally discriminating, so its ambiguity is retained. Greek lacks there at the exit.
Verse 43:13 Different
Hebrew–English Rabbinic Priority
[43:13] He will break the standing pillars of Beth-shemesh in Egypt's land and burn the houses of Egypt's gods with fire.
Greek–English Saints Priority
[50:13] He will shatter the pillars of the City of the Sun, those in On, and burn their houses with fire.
Classification & Notes
Different. Text: Greek expressly identifies the solar city with On, whereas Hebrew says Beth-shemesh in Egypt's land. Greek their-houses differs from the repeated houses-of-Egypt's-gods. Standing pillars is retained without asserting a particular monument's identity.
