Chapter 3

The outpouring of the Spirit

Verse 3:1 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

3:1 “Afterward I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your elders dream dreams, and your young men see visions.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

3:1 “After these things I will pour out from My Spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your elders dream dreams, and your young men see visions.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Greek adds the partitive from to My Spirit; the groups and gifts correspond. Saints: Acts 2:16–21 explicitly identifies Joel as the source of Peter's Pentecost citation, replacing afterward with in the last days and reversing the elders/young men order [ACT2]. These adaptations are not substituted into Joel.

Continue this biblical connection — Apostolic quotation: Acts 2:16-21.

Verse 3:2 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

3:2 Even upon male slaves and female slaves in those days I will pour out My Spirit.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

3:2 Even upon male slaves and female slaves in those days I will pour out from My Spirit.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: The inclusion of enslaved men and women agrees; Greek again says from My Spirit. Neither Joel column has the added possessive My before the slaves or the closing they will prophesy found in Acts 2:18 [ACT2]. Saints: Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture 17.19, uses Joel through the Pentecost citation to stress abundant divine giving without preference for social rank [CYRIL17]; that is reception of the promise.

Verse 3:3 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

3:3 I will give wonders in the heavens and on the earth: blood, fire and columns of smoke.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

3:3 I will give wonders in heaven and upon the earth: blood, fire and a vapor of smoke.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew smoke columns become a singular Greek vapor/cloud of smoke. Both place wonders in the heavenly and earthly realms. Reception: Acts 2:19 adds above, signs and below to its citation; these are not inserted into Joel [ACT2].

Verse 3:4 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

3:4 The sun will turn to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of YHWH's great and fearsome day.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

3:4 The sun will turn to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the Lord's great and manifest day.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: The celestial transformations agree; Hebrew fearsome becomes Greek epiphanēs, manifest/conspicuous.

Verse 3:5 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

3:5 Everyone who calls upon YHWH's name will escape, for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be escape, as YHWH has said, and among the survivors whom YHWH calls.”

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

3:5 Everyone who calls upon the Lord's name will be saved, for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be one who escapes, as the Lord said, and bearers of good news whom the Lord has called.”

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: The opening deliverance promise agrees, but Hebrew survivors become Greek euangelizomenoi, bearers of good news. The final group's role changes from surviving to proclaiming. The complete Zion and final-group clauses are retained although Acts 2:21 quotes only the opening promise [ACT2].
