I Have Loved You, Says the Lord

1:1A pronouncement of the word of the Lord concerning Israel through His messenger. Take it to your hearts!

1:2“I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you said, “How have You loved us?” “Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” says the Lord. “Yet I loved Jacob,

1:3but Esau I hated. I appointed his territories for disappearance and his inheritance as gifts of a wilderness.”

1:4Because Idumea will say, “It has been overthrown; let us return and rebuild the deserted places,” thus says the Lord Almighty: “They will build, but I will overthrow. They will be called ‘Territories of Lawlessness’ and ‘A People Against Whom the Lord Has Drawn Up His Forces Forever.’”

1:5Your eyes will see, and you yourselves will say, “The Lord has been magnified beyond Israel’s territories!”

Where Is My Honor?

1:6“A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is My honor? If I am a master, where is the fear of Me?” says the Lord Almighty. You priests who belittle My name! But you said, “How have we belittled Your name?”

1:7“By bringing polluted loaves to My altar.” But you said, “How have we polluted them?” “By your saying, ‘The Lord’s table is despised, and the foods placed upon it are despised.’”

1:8“For if you bring a blind animal for sacrifice, is that not evil? If you bring one that is lame or sick, is that not evil? Bring it, then, to your ruler! Will he accept it? Will he show you favor?” says the Lord Almighty.

1:9“And now appease the face of your God and plead with Him. These things have happened in your hands. Will I show favor to any of your persons?” says the Lord Almighty.

1:10“For even among you doors will be shut, and you will not kindle My altar for nothing. I have no desire for you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will not accept a sacrifice from your hands.”

From the Sun’s Rising to Its Setting

1:11“For from the sun’s rising to its setting, My name has been glorified among the nations, and in every place incense is brought to My name, together with a pure sacrifice, because My name is great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.

1:12“But you profane it by your saying, ‘The Lord’s table is polluted, and the foods placed upon it are despised.’

1:13“And you said, ‘These things are from hardship,’ and I blew them away,” says the Lord Almighty. “You were bringing things seized by force, the lame and the afflicted. If you bring the sacrifice, shall I accept these things from your hands?” says the Lord Almighty.

1:14“Cursed is one who was able, and had a male in his flock and a vow concerning it, yet sacrifices a damaged animal to the Lord. For I am a great King,” says the Lord Almighty, “and My name is manifest among the nations.”
