Clay on the Eyes, and a Man Who Would Not Be Silenced

The Man Born Blind
9:1And as He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.
9:2His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, so that he was born blind?”
9:3Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but so that the works of God might be manifested in him.
9:4We must work the works of the One who sent Me while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work.
9:5While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”
9:6Having said these things, He spat on the ground and made mud from the spittle, and spread the mud upon his eyes.
9:7And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam”—which is translated Sent. So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
The Neighbors Question the Man
9:8Then the neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, “Is this not the one who sat and begged?”
9:9Some said, “This is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He said, “I am he.”
9:10So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
9:11He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and spread it on my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went away and washed, and received my sight.”
9:12And they said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”
They Brought the Man Who Had Been Blind
9:13They brought the man who had formerly been blind to the Pharisees.
9:14Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
9:15So the Pharisees also asked him again how he received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
9:16Then some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man do such signs?” And there was division among them.
9:17So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”
The Parents Are Questioned
9:18So the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight
9:19and asked them, saying, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How, then, does he now see?”
9:20His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
9:21But how he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”
9:22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him as Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
9:23For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
The Man Questioned Again
9:24So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”
9:25He answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. One thing I know: though I was blind, now I see.”
9:26So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”
9:27He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not hear. Why do you want to hear again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”
9:28They reviled him and said, “You are that man’s disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples.
9:29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but this man—we do not know where He is from.”
9:30The man answered them, “Why, this is the marvelous thing: you do not know where He is from, and He opened my eyes!
9:31We know that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone worships God and does His will, He hears that person.
9:32Since the age began, it has not been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
9:33If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
9:34They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and do you teach us?” And they cast him out.
Sight and Blindness
9:35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when He found him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
9:36He answered, “And who is He, Sir, so that I may believe in Him?”
9:37Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and the One speaking with you is He.”
9:38He said, “I believe, Lord,” and worshiped Him.
9:39And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”
9:40Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “Are we also blind?”
9:41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now you say, ‘We see’; your sin remains.”
