On a Sabbath He Was Passing Through the Grainfields
6:1On a Sabbath He was passing through grainfields. His disciples plucked the ears, rubbed them in their hands, and ate.
6:2Some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbaths?”
6:3Jesus answered them, “Have you not even read what David did when he and those with him were hungry,
6:4how he entered God’s house, took and ate the loaves of the presentation, and gave them to those with him, although no one except the priests alone may lawfully eat them?”
6:5He said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
The Man with the Withered Hand
6:6On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. A man was there whose right hand was withered.
6:7The scribes and Pharisees watched closely to see whether He would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a way to accuse Him.
6:8But He knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Rise and stand in the middle.” He rose and stood.
6:9Jesus said to them, “I ask you: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or do evil, to save a life or destroy it?”
6:10Looking around at all of them, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was restored.
6:11They were filled with mindless anger and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Choosing of the Twelve
6:12In those days He went out to the mountain to pray, and spent the night in prayer to God.
6:13When day came, He called His disciples and chose twelve from them, whom He also named apostles:
6:14Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,
6:15and Matthew and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot,
6:16and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Crowds on the Level Place
6:17He came down with them and stood on a level place. There was a large crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of the people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon.
6:18They had come to hear Him and be healed of their diseases; those troubled by unclean spirits were also healed.
6:19The whole crowd sought to touch Him, because power went out from Him and healed everyone.
Blessings
6:20Lifting His eyes toward His disciples, He said, “Blessed are the poor, because yours is God’s kingdom.
6:21Blessed are those hungry now, because you will be filled. Blessed are those weeping now, because you will laugh.
6:22Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you, reproach you, and cast out your name as evil because of the Son of Man.
6:23Rejoice on that day and leap, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; their fathers treated the prophets in the same way.
Woes
6:24But woe to you who are rich, because you have received your consolation.
6:25Woe to you who are filled now, because you will hunger. Woe to those laughing now, because you will mourn and weep.
6:26Woe when all people speak well of you, for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way.
Love Your Enemies
6:27But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you.
6:28Bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you.
6:29Offer the other cheek also to the one striking you on the cheek; and from the one taking your cloak, do not withhold your tunic also.
6:30Give to everyone who asks you, and do not demand back your belongings from the one who takes them.
6:31As you wish people to do to you, do likewise to them.
6:32If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
6:33If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
6:34If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to receive the equivalent back.
6:35But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing back. Your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and evil.
6:36Become merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Do Not Judge, and You Will Not Be Judged
6:37Do not judge, and you will certainly not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will certainly not be condemned. Release, and you will be released.
6:38Give, and it will be given to you. They will put into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, overflowing; for by the measure you measure, it will be measured back to you.”
The Blind Leading the Blind
6:39He also told them a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will they not both fall into a pit?
6:40A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone fully trained will be like his teacher.
6:41Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
6:42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite! First take the beam out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
No Good Tree Produces Rotten Fruit
6:43For no good tree produces rotten fruit, nor again does a rotten tree produce good fruit.
6:44Each tree is known by its own fruit. People do not gather figs from thorns, nor harvest grapes from a bramble.
6:45The good person brings out good from the good treasure of his heart, and the evil person brings out evil from the evil treasure; for his mouth speaks from the heart’s abundance.
The Two Foundations
6:46Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say?
6:47Everyone who comes to Me, hears My words and does them—I will show you whom he resembles.
6:48He resembles a man building a house, who dug and went deep and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.
6:49But the one who heard and did not act resembles a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river burst against it, and immediately it collapsed; the ruin of that house was great.”
