A Widow’s Only Son Given Back to Her

The Centurion’s Slave
7:1When He had finished all His sayings in the people’s hearing, He entered Capernaum.
7:2A certain centurion had a slave who was ill and about to die, and who was precious to him.
7:3Hearing about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him to come and preserve his slave.
7:4When they reached Jesus, they urged Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant him this,
7:5for he loves our nation, and he himself built our synagogue for us.”
7:6Jesus went with them. When He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy for You to enter under my roof.
7:7Therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But speak with a word, and let my servant be healed.
7:8For I too am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
7:9When Jesus heard this, He marveled at him. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”
7:10Those who had been sent returned to the house and found the slave in good health.
The Widow’s Son at Nain
7:11Afterward He went to a city called Nain, and His disciples and a large crowd traveled with Him.
7:12As He approached the city’s gate, behold, a dead man was being carried out, his mother’s only son. She was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the city was with her.
7:13When the Lord saw her, He was moved with compassion for her and said, “Do not weep.”
7:14He approached and touched the bier; the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I tell you, rise.”
7:15The dead man sat up and began speaking, and He gave him to his mother.
7:16Fear seized everyone, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us,” and, “God has visited His people.”
7:17This report about Him spread throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.
The Question from John
7:18John’s disciples reported all these things to him. John called two of his disciples
7:19and sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the One who is coming, or should we expect another?”
7:20When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the One who is coming, or should we expect another?’”
7:21At that hour He healed many of diseases, afflictions and evil spirits, and graciously gave sight to many blind people.
7:22He answered them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind recover sight, the lame walk, leprous people are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor receive good news.
7:23And blessed is whoever does not stumble because of Me.”
Jesus Speaks About John
7:24When John’s messengers had departed, He began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?
7:25But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who live in splendid clothing and luxury are in royal palaces.
7:26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
7:27This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way ahead of You.’
7:28I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John; yet the lesser one in God’s kingdom is greater than he.”
7:29When all the people and the tax collectors heard, they acknowledged God’s righteousness, having been baptized with John’s baptism.
7:30But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
To What, Then, Shall I Compare This Generation?
7:31“To what, then, shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?
7:32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we lamented, and you did not weep.’
7:33For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
7:34The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and wine-drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’
7:35Yet wisdom was justified by all her children.”
The Woman Who Anointed His Feet
7:36One of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table.
7:37And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner learned that He was reclining in the Pharisee’s house. She brought an alabaster vessel of perfume
7:38and stood behind Him at His feet, weeping. She began to wet His feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. She kept kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.
7:39When the Pharisee who had invited Him saw it, he said within himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who and what sort of woman is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”
7:40Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” He said, “Teacher, say it.”
7:41“A certain lender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty.
7:42Since they had nothing with which to repay, he graciously forgave them both. Which of them, then, will love him more?”
7:43Simon answered, “I suppose the one to whom he forgave more.” He said to him, “You judged correctly.”
7:44Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
7:45You gave Me no kiss, but from the time I entered she has not stopped kissing My feet.
7:46You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.
7:47For this reason I tell you: her many sins are forgiven, because she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little loves little.”
7:48He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
7:49Those reclining with Him began to say within themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
7:50He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go into peace.”
