Since many have undertaken to arrange an account of the events fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning became eyewitnesses and servants of the word handed them down to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed everything carefully from the beginning, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the matters in which you have been instructed.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being. What has come into being in Him was life, and the life was the light of humanity. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
There came a man sent from God; his name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness concerning the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but came to bear witness concerning the Light. The true Light, which gives light to every person, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to what was His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, He gave them authority to become children of God—to those who believe in His name, who were born not from bloods, nor from the will of flesh, nor from the will of a man, but from God.
And the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the Only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John bears witness concerning Him and has cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘The One coming after me has come before me, because He was before me.’” For from His fullness we all received, and grace in place of grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only-begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father—He has made Him known.
