Prayer That Does Not Lose Heart

And He told them a parable about their need to pray always and not lose heart, saying, “There was a certain judge in a certain city who neither feared God nor respected any person. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a time he was unwilling. But afterward he said within himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God or respect any person, yet because this widow troubles me, I will give her justice, lest by coming continually she wear me down.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God bring about justice for His chosen ones who cry to Him day and night? And will He delay over them? I tell you, He will bring about justice for them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded the rest as nothing: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

“The Pharisee stood and prayed these things to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of humanity—plunderers, unrighteous people, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I tithe everything I acquire.’ But the tax collector, standing far away, would not even lift his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be propitious to me, the sinner.’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
