When Jesus finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came into the territories of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Great crowds gathered and followed Him; as was His custom, He taught them again and healed them there. Pharisees came to Him, testing Him and saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” He asked, “What did Moses command you?” They answered, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and dismiss her.”
He answered, “Have you not read that the Creator from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has yoked together, let no human being separate.” They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command giving a certificate of divorce and divorcing her?” He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so. I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except on account of sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery; and the one who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”
In the house His disciples asked Him about this again. He said, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
The disciples said to Him, “If this is the situation of the man with the wife, it is better not to marry.” He said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born so from their mother’s womb, there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by human beings, and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs because of the kingdom of the heavens. Let the one able to receive it receive it.”
