As Jesus set out on the road, a young man who was a ruler ran up, knelt before Him, and asked, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered, “Why do you call Me good? Why do you ask Me about what is good? No one is good except One—God. If you wish to enter life, keep the commandments.” He asked, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The young man answered, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth. What do I still lack?” Jesus looked at him and loved him. He said, “You lack one thing. If you wish to be perfect, go, sell everything you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” His face fell at the word, and he went away deeply grieved, for he was very rich and had many properties.
Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were astounded at His words. But Jesus answered them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” They were exceedingly astonished and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With humans it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”
Peter said, “Behold, we have left our own possessions—everything—and followed You. What then will there be for us?” Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you that you who have followed Me, in the renewal, when the Son of Man sits upon the throne of His glory, will also sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. There is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, wife, children, or fields for My name’s sake, for the good news, and for God’s kingdom, who will not receive many times more, a hundredfold now in this time—houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the coming age inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
