They were on the road going up to Jerusalem. Jesus went ahead of them; they were astounded, and those following were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside, He told them what would happen: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything written through the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn Him to death and hand Him over to the Gentiles. He will be mocked, mistreated, spat upon, flogged, and crucified. They will kill Him, and on the third day He will rise.”

But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not understand what was being said.
