The mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with James and John and bowed before Him, asking a favor. He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at Your right and one at Your left, in Your kingdom.” James and John said to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask You.” He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They said to Him, “Grant us to sit, one at Your right and one at Your left, in Your glory.”
Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” They said, “We can.” He said, “You will indeed drink My cup and be baptized with My baptism. But to sit at My right or at My left is not Mine to give; it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father.”
When the ten heard, they began to be indignant with James and John. Jesus called them to Him and said to them, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it is not so among you. Whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom in exchange for many.”
