In the morning, as they left Bethany and returned to the city, Jesus was hungry. Seeing a fig tree in leaf beside the road some distance away, He approached to see whether He might find anything on it. He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. He said, “Let no one ever eat fruit from you again.” His disciples heard, and the tree withered.
They came to Jerusalem. Jesus entered the temple and drove out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry a vessel through the temple. He taught them, “Is it not written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a robbers’ cave.”
Blind and lame people came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonders He did and the children crying in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing children You prepared praise’?”
He taught daily in the temple. The chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people sought how to destroy Him, but feared Him, for the whole crowd was astonished at His teaching and hung upon His words. They could not find what to do. When evening came, Jesus left them and went outside the city to Bethany, where He spent the night.
