He began to tell the people another parable: “A householder planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress, and built a tower. He leased it to tenant farmers and traveled abroad for a considerable time. When the season for fruit came, he sent a slave to receive his share. The farmers seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty. He sent another; they struck his head, dishonored him, and sent him away empty. He sent a third; they wounded him and threw him out. He sent still others, more than before: some they beat, some they killed, and another they stoned.
“He had one more, a beloved son. ‘What shall I do?’ he said. ‘I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ Last of all he sent him. But the farmers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and take his inheritance.’ They seized him, cast him outside the vineyard, and killed him. When the master comes, what will he do to those farmers?” They answered, “He will miserably destroy those miserable men and lease the vineyard to others who will give him its fruits in their seasons.” Jesus said, “He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “May it never happen!”
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected became the head of the corner; this came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people producing its fruits. And the one falling upon this stone will be shattered; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”
The chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees knew He had spoken the parable against them and sought to seize Him at that very hour. But they feared the crowd, who regarded Him as a prophet, and left Him and went away.
