The Pharisees took counsel how to trap Jesus in a statement. They kept watch and sent their disciples with the Herodians, spies pretending to be righteous, hoping to seize on His words and hand Him over to the governor’s authority. They said, “Teacher, we know You are truthful, speak and teach rightly, and teach God’s way in truth. You are not swayed by anyone and do not look at outward status. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not? Should we pay or not pay?”

Knowing their evil intent, Jesus said, “Why do you test Me, hypocrites? Show Me the coin of the tribute.” They brought Him a denarius. He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Therefore give back to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God.”

They were unable to seize on His saying before the people. Marveling greatly at His answer, they fell silent, left Him, and went away.
