Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees gathered. One of the scribes, an expert in the law who had heard the discussion and seen that Jesus answered well, tested Him: “Teacher, which commandment is first of all?”

Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole mind, and with your whole strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” The scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher! You have truly said that He is one, and there is no other besides Him. To love Him with the whole heart, with the whole understanding, and with the whole strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Seeing that he answered thoughtfully, Jesus said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” No one dared to question Him any further.

“On these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”
