He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When its branch becomes tender and puts forth leaves, you see and know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, know that He is near, at the doors, and that God’s kingdom is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things happen. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will certainly not pass away.
“Concerning that day and hour, no one knows, not even the angels of the heavens, nor the Son, but the Father alone. For just as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and took them all away. So also will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field: one is taken and one is left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one is taken and one is left. So keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord comes. But know this: if the householder had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you too must be ready, because the Son of Man comes at an hour you do not expect. Who, then, is the faithful and prudent slave whom the master appointed over his household to give them food at the proper time?
“Blessed is that slave whom his master, when he comes, will find doing so. Truly I tell you that he will appoint him over all his belongings. But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My master delays,’ and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him in two and assign his portion with the hypocrites. There will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
“Watch yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down by carousing, drunkenness, and life’s cares, and that day come suddenly like a trap. It will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Stay awake at every season, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things and stand before the Son of Man.
“Watch out; stay awake, for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going abroad who left his house and gave his slaves authority, each his own work, and commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch. Therefore keep watch, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming: in the evening, at midnight, at cockcrow, or in the morning. Otherwise he may come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: keep watch!”
By day He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. And all the people would come early in the morning to Him in the temple to hear Him.
