As they reclined and ate, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Amen, amen, I tell you, one of you will hand Me over—one who is eating with Me. Behold, his hand is with Me on the table.” The disciples looked at one another, perplexed and exceedingly grieved. They began discussing who it could be, each asking, “Surely it is not I, Lord?”
He answered, “One of the Twelve, the one who dipped his hand with Me in the dish, will hand Me over. The Son of Man goes according to what has been determined, as it is written concerning Him. But woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is handed over! It would have been good for him if that man had not been born.” Judas asked, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said, “You have said it.”
One of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining in Jesus’ bosom. So Simon Peter signaled to this one to ask who it might be of whom He was speaking. Leaning back thus upon Jesus’ chest, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is the one for whom I will dip the morsel and give it to him.” So He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. And after the morsel, then Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, “What you do, do more quickly.” But none of those reclining knew for what purpose He said this to him. For some thought, since Judas had the money box, that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. So, having received the morsel, he went out at once. And it was night.
