After singing a hymn, Jesus went out with His disciples, as was His custom, to the Mount of Olives. They crossed the winter-stream Kidron and entered a garden called Gethsemane. Judas knew the place, for Jesus had often gathered there with His disciples. Jesus said, “Sit here while I go over there and pray. Pray that you may not enter into testing.”
Taking Peter, James, and John with Him, He began to be deeply alarmed, grieved, and distressed. “My soul is deeply grieved, even to death,” He said. “Remain here and keep watch with Me.” He withdrew about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and fell upon His face on the ground, praying that, if possible, the hour might pass from Him. “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. If You are willing, let this cup pass from Me. Nevertheless, not as I wish, but as You wish. Let not My will but Yours be done.”
And an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like clots of blood falling to the ground.
Rising from prayer, He returned to the disciples and found them sleeping from grief. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not keep watch with Me for one hour? Why are you sleeping? Rise, keep watch, and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Again He went away a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, let Your will be done.” He came and again found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. He left them and went away again, praying a third time and saying the same words again.
Their eyes were weighed down, and they did not know what to answer Him. He came the third time and said, “Sleep on now and rest. It is enough. Behold, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is handed over into sinners’ hands. Rise, let us go. Behold, the one handing Me over has drawn near.”
