While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, leading a great crowd from the chief priests, scribes, Pharisees, and elders, with the cohort, commander, and officers. They carried lanterns, torches, swords, and clubs. Judas had given them a sign: “The One I kiss is He. Seize Him and lead Him away securely.” He approached Jesus, saying, “Greetings, Rabbi,” and kissed Him. Jesus said, “Friend, do what you have come for. Judas, do you hand over the Son of Man with a kiss?”
Then Jesus, knowing everything that was coming upon Him, went out and says to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He says to them, “I am.” Now Judas, who was handing Him over, was also standing with them. So when He said to them, “I am,” they went backward and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am. So if you seek Me, let these go away,” so that the word that He spoke might be fulfilled: “Of those whom You have given Me, I lost not one.”
Those around Jesus saw what was about to happen and asked, “Lord, shall we strike with a sword?” Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, Malchus, cutting off his right ear. Jesus answered, “Allow this much.” He touched the ear and healed him. He said to Peter, “Return your sword to its place, for all who take a sword will perish by a sword. The cup the Father has given Me—shall I not drink it? Do you think I cannot plead with My Father, and He will provide Me at once more than twelve legions of angels? How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen this way?”
He said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, elders, and crowd, “Have you come out against Me as against a robber, with swords and clubs to arrest Me? Day after day I sat with you teaching in the temple, and you did not stretch out your hands to seize Me. But this is your hour and the authority of darkness. All this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” The cohort, commander, and officers laid hands on Him, arrested Him, and bound Him. All His disciples left Him and fled.
A certain young man was following Him, wearing a linen cloth over his naked body. They seized him, but he left the linen cloth behind and fled naked.
