Then Judas, who was handing Him over, saw that He had been condemned. Filled with regret, he returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I sinned by handing over innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” He threw the silver coins into the sanctuary and withdrew; then he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests took the silver coins and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” After taking counsel, they bought the potter’s field with them as a burial place for strangers. Therefore that field has been called Field of Blood until today. Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty silver coins, the price of the One priced, whom some of the sons of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”
