Then they lead Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. It was early morning, and they themselves did not enter the praetorium, so that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. So Pilate went outside to them and says, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not doing evil, we would not have handed Him over to you.” Then Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He spoke to indicate by what kind of death He was going to die.
They accused Him, “We found this man turning our nation astray, forbidding tribute to Caesar, and saying He Himself is Christ, a king.” Pilate entered the praetorium, called Jesus, and asked, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “You say so.”
Jesus answered, “Do you say this from yourself, or did others tell you about Me?” Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If My kingdom were from this world, My attendants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, My kingdom is not from here.” Then Pilate said to Him, “So then, You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is from the truth hears My voice.” Pilate says to Him, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, “I find no charge against Him.”
The chief priests and elders accused Him of many things. Pilate asked, “Do You answer nothing? Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” But Jesus gave no further answer, not even one word, and the governor marveled greatly. The accusers insisted, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place.”
