Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan. Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness, where He was led in the Spirit for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals. He fasted forty days and forty nights, eating nothing, and when those days were completed He became hungry.
The tempter came and said to Him, “If You are God’s Son, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But He answered, “It is written: ‘A human being shall not live on bread alone, but on every word proceeding through the mouth of God.’”
The devil took Him into Jerusalem, the holy city, and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. He said, “If You are God’s Son, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, to guard You,’ and ‘They will lift You on their hands, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written: ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
The devil also took Him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world and their glory in a moment of time. He said, “I will give You all this authority and their glory, because it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. I will give You all these things if You fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.’”
Having completed every test, the devil departed from Him until an opportune time. And behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
