When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather an uproar was arising, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this blood. See to it yourselves.” All the people answered, “His blood be upon us and upon our children.”

Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. He released Barabbas, the man imprisoned for uprising and murder, and, after having Jesus flogged, handed Him over to their will to be crucified. The soldiers stripped off the mocking robe, dressed Him in His own garments, and led Him away.
