Bearing the cross for Himself, Jesus went out toward the Place of a Skull, called Golgotha in Hebrew. On the way the soldiers seized a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the countryside, the father of Alexander and Rufus. They compelled him to carry the cross and laid it upon him to carry behind Jesus.

And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who beat themselves in mourning and lamented Him. But Jesus turned toward them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over Me, but weep over yourselves and over your children. For behold, days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that did not bear, and the breasts that did not nourish.’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall upon us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ For if they do these things with the green wood, what will happen with the dry?”

Two others, criminals, were led with Him to be put to death. At Golgotha they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh and with gall. After tasting it, He was unwilling to drink. There they crucified Him and the two criminals, one at His right and one at His left, with Jesus in the middle.
