About the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land and lasted until the ninth hour, as the sun’s light failed. At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”—“My God, My God, why did You forsake Me?” Some standing nearby heard and said, “Look, He is calling Elijah.”
Jesus, knowing that all things had been completed, said, so that the Scripture might be brought to completion, “I thirst.” A vessel of sour wine stood there. Someone ran, filled a sponge with it, and lifted it on a reed to give Him a drink; the sponge was brought to His mouth on hyssop. They said, “Leave Him; let us see whether Elijah comes to save Him and take Him down.” When Jesus received the sour wine, He said, “It is completed.” Crying again with a loud voice, He said, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” He bowed His head, handed over His spirit, and breathed His last.
The veil of the sanctuary was torn down the middle, in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks split. Tombs opened, and many bodies of the holy ones who had fallen asleep were raised; after His rising they came out of the tombs, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
The centurion standing opposite Him saw how He breathed His last, and he and those guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that happened. They were exceedingly afraid. The centurion glorified God: “Truly this Man was righteous. Truly this Man was God’s Son.” All the crowds gathered for the spectacle saw what had happened and returned beating their breasts.
All His acquaintances stood at a distance, and many women watched there. They had followed Him from Galilee and served Him, and many others had come with Him to Jerusalem. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Little and Joseph, also called Joses, Salome, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
